Simon Tyler knows his job as a gay romance author makes his lack of faith in love more than a little ironic, but he’s tired of being used for his wallet. When a night out turns into a matchmaking scheme orchestrated by his best friends—though he’s not the target—Simon’s not thrilled, but since he’s sworn off happily-ever-after anyway, he goes along with it… until he meets the object of their efforts, Adrian, and finds perhaps he hasn’t given up on love after all.

Professor Adrian Keys has tried to date hearing men before, but being deaf himself, he’s never had any success at making a connection. After his friends con him into going out and Adrian realizes it’s all an elaborate plan to set him up, he braces for yet another failure, only to discover there is a spark—except it’s not with the man his friends had in mind, but with Simon Tyler instead.

Not all their friends have found a way past their romantic failures, but Simon and Adrian might be on the path to happily-ever-after.

The darkness of the parking lot stretched out in front of Adrian Keys, and the door to the Mexican restaurant spilled light onto the pavement every time someone opened it to exit or enter. Stupid. He regretted letting his friend talk him into going out with “the guys.” By the time he reached the door, he had almost talked himself out of going in, but no such luck. A gentle tap to his shoulder broke him out of his paralysis. When he turned, he was face-to-face with Chase, his one-time date turned friend.

Distracted by his concerns, he barely noticed Chase was dressed in a light blue button-down shirt that conformed to his lean and lithe chest. He wore low-rise black jeans that were faded on the thighs, chunky biker boots, and a platinum wrist cuff on one wrist—Adrian knew the cuff was new. When they’d met, Chase had worn a double-buckle black leather one instead. The thing that caught his attention, as it always did, was Chase’s eyes. They were one part amber, one part blue, and another part green, with the most beautiful flecks of gold in them.

Shaking off his inappropriate distraction, he tried to smile, and said and signed, “Hi.”

“Hi, Adrian. You’re not leaving already, are you?” Chase signed. Adrian loved how hard Chase worked to improve his ASL and how he always used it with him now. Even though he could read lips quite well, communicating  in  his  native  language  and  style  was  more  fluid  and comfortable for him.

“No.” Adrian bit his bottom lip, looking away from Chase. He glanced at the restaurant a moment, not sure his worries would make sense to anyone Hearing before returning his gaze to his friend. “I’m worried your friends will be uncomfortable with me or that I won’t be able to keep up with the conversation.”

The grin that spread across Chase’s face was both endearing and unnerving. “There’s only a few of us, and it’s really good food. Promise.” He winked. “Tonight is a night for fun!” Before Adrian realized what was happening, Chase draped his arm around Adrian’s shoulders and pulled him in for a hug.

Adrian allowed Chase to drag him inside, and before he knew it, he sat at a long, curved booth with six others, including Chase. Warmth blanketed him on all sides thanks both to the warm bodies and the heater that valiantly fought off the frigid temperatures outside. Milwaukee in the early spring was cold, icy, and just plain miserable to be out in, though he would take cold over heat any day of the week—you can always put more on, after all.

“Adrian, you know Rhys, and these guys are Dale, Simon, Jamie, and Grayson,” Chase explained, signing as he spoke, making sure to gesture to each man in turn. “We’re only missing Vaughn, but he’s still overseas doing his teacher-swap thing. Boys, this is Adrian.”

He worked hard to smile and waved. “Hello.”

They all replied with heys and his as he looked between the men.

Excerpt:

Keith’s body pressed against his back. Without thinking, he leaned back into the warmth and strength now surrounding him. He’d caught a whiff of the man’s earthy scent before, but now it seemed as though it poured off him, seeping into every nerve and thought Jason had.

“Why?” Jason breathed, unsure what to do next. He knew what he looked like, and at just a touch under six feet tall, with somewhat dirty blond hair cut in a conservative, business look, and lackluster hazel eyes, he couldn’t believe a man with Keith’s rugged, model-worthy looks could really want him.

“I think it was the serious look on your face as you watched us unload.” He felt a shrug against his back. “Or maybe the activity you got up to later was what caught my eye. But either way, I was hoping you’d come over soon.”

Keith traced his ear with the tip of his tongue, sending shivers through Jason’s suddenly superheated body. “A-act-tivity?” Jason asked. He hadn’t thought anyone could see him.

Keith pressed against him tight, letting Jason feel how hard he was—and how big. Damn! “Oh yeah. I dreamed about you, about taking you in this very kitchen.”

This couldn’t be happening. Keith wanted him too? “And what did you p-picture us doing?”

“I’d rather show you,” Keith whispered into his ear before sucking the lobe into his hot, wet mouth and biting gently.

Jason nearly came just from that little action. “Oh God.” He whimpered, pushing back and rubbing his butt against Keith’s rigid cock. “You—I— Oh, please,” he choked out. He never did things like this, but right then, all he could think about was how perfect Keith would feel deep inside him, filling him, taking him right there on the counter.

Keith spun him around to face him so fast Jason got dizzy. He looked up, confused, before Keith took his mouth in a rough, demanding kiss that stole his breath and what was left of his thoughts. His world condensed down to the sweet bite of teeth and the wet slide of Keith’s searching tongue as he mapped and ate at Jason’s mouth. He was vaguely aware of moans and pleading whimpers, but he couldn’t focus on anything but the man currently devouring his very soul.

Keith’s fingers dug into his hip, hard enough he knew he’d have bruises later—a thought that brought more heat to his passion and joy to his battered heart. He snaked his other hand up to Jason’s head, his fingers threading through Jason’s short hair, and tugged enough to drive his want and need higher. Keith used his grip on Jason’s hair to tilt his head to the side and back, eliciting more breathy sounds from Jason. Keith kissed down his neck, nipping as he went. He rubbed his cheek against Jason’s and demanded roughly, “Tell me I can have you. Right here. Right now.”

Before he could make his mouth work, Keith bit him, sinking his teeth into the flesh where his neck and shoulder met. Instead of saying yes, as he’d intended, Jason keened high and loud, the sound echoing through the kitchen. Keith swiped his tongue over the now-tender skin before kissing his way back up his neck. “I need to hear you say it. And as much as I love the sounds you’re making, you have to answer me. Now.”

The deep, rumbling words edged him closer to oblivion. God, but he loved a man who knew what he wanted during sex. “Y-yes,” he panted and rocked his trapped dick against Keith’s. “Please, yes.”

The possibility for any more words was cut off when Keith plunged his tongue back inside Jason’s mouth, grinding their cocks together as he thrust in a way Jason hoped Keith would soon be doing a bit lower.

When Rory Ó Cuinn, a Sidhe warrior, is sent by the Sidhe Queen’s Council to reestablish the magically enhanced vampire hunters known as Guardians, he doesn’t question his mission.

Lord Lorccán is a rare vampire noble, as he only kills humans who are far more monster than not. When he meets the enigmatic vampire Mistress Anya from the House Millar, he believes he’s found an ally in creating a warrior class to police the vampires and protect the innocent—human and vampire alike.

The two goals bring Rory and Lor together, in more ways than one. But Sidhe nobles aren’t meant to love the damned and Rory fights against a rising attraction for Lor, just as Lor pushes every one of Rory’s buttons—mostly on purpose.

When they team up, using both their magics and knowledge, to save those that matter most and find possible future Guardians, their predesigned realities and perceptions change and twist. As love, hate, passion, and betrayal collide, the only question left is which emotions the pair will grasp and hold.

Excerpt

I gently squeezed the hand that still held mine. “Lorccán, could we adjourn to the study? I want to spend more time getting to know my charge and hopefully I can then figure out the strange reaction you both have had to the vampire girl.”

“I already told you, Piscín, my home is yours. The study would be fine, as long as Dec doesn’t mind.”

“No, I’m game.”

We stood and headed to the study where I had spent most of the day before.

“Oh, hey. You do realise that there’s no one here to yell at us for acting up?” Declán suddenly chirped, grinning from ear to ear at Lorccán, as they proceeded me into the study.

The growl that suddenly burst from Lorccán was frightening. All at once he turned and pounced at Declán. Dec spun with amazing speed for a human and managed to use Lor’s strength and weight against him. When they landed, Declán was on top, attempting to pin Lor’s hands to the floor.

Before I thought about it, I had silver blades in hand and surged forward to protect Declán. Dec suddenly shifted from straddling Lorccán to crouching over him protectively, his own blades suddenly appearing in hand. “Stop! Put your blades down now, Rory! Don’t make me have to fight you, please. I will if you push.”

I stopped to process Declán’s words against what I’d just witnessed. “But, he attacked you!” I countered. “Why are you protecting him?”

“He was not attacking me. Rory, he was reacting to what I’d said. Now, put your blades away. I don’t wish to fight you, but I will not allow you to harm Lor.”

Lorccán had gone still as only a vampire could, eyes wide with disbelief. “I would not attack Declán. You misunderstand. We were playing. We found out the first time we met that he without his blades, and me without my fangs and power, are actually pretty closely matched. Anya found it amusing, but his husband always becomes upset; convinced I’m either incapable of control or trying to seduce the lad. Nicholas is far too possessive and jealous for us to play or practise if he’s nearby.”

Looking back and forth between the two, Declán had not moved from his defencive stance over Lorccán yet, I tried again, “But the growl. The surprise attack. But—”

“Why would I defend him if he was attacking me?” Declán interrupted.

“I don’t know, but as you serve vampires and a House, mate with vampires, even guard them at council meetings…how would I know why you would protect a creature that was attacking you?”

Lorccán’s face crumpled at my words. He went from a look of disbelief to one of hurt in an instant, then turned away from me. Reaching up to shift himself from under Declán, he murmured barely above a whisper, “Creature? You truly believe I would try to kill Dec? I know you’ve only known me a couple of days but—” Shaking his head he stood with such swift motion, I froze.

“Declán, you are more than capable of educating your trainer in how things are for you. You do not actually need me here for this. I will speak with you later.”

“Lor,” Declán said as he grabbed Lorccán’s arm. “He doesn’t understand yet. He’ll learn to see you like we do.”

Lorccán gave a tight nod, then was gone.

WIP it Wednesday: “Whiskers of a Chance”

Thank you, Nikki for having me over today!

I can’t believe my first paranormal is coming out soon…"Whiskers of a Chance is due out in Sept/Oct of 2015! (Oh, and I just got the preliminary work on the cover and *swoon* am so in love with!)

*Kermit flail*

As promised, I’m sharing a little more from my upcoming baby. This story started out as a short. Yep, I tried to write a short that was not an add on. I’ve only managed that twice and in both cases, I plan to go back and write those into full books this year or next, lol. So yeah, me and short stories just don’t work.

That said, I couldn’t leave poor Keith and Jason to languish, so I reworked the short and let the full story unfold. I hope you will like the outcome!

So, in the vein of 6 Sentence Sunday (which is where you all got to learn about Designs of Desire if you recall, lol) I thought I’d start showing off little snippets. This one isn’t 6 sentences, but it’s close.

Adam Skyler’s expression was stoic, as always, but the energy pouring off him was bordering on violent. Keith waited for his father to respond; knowing Keith would get what he wanted, though not certain what the cost would be yet. One did not simply do things without the great and mighty Adam Skyler, Alpha of the Glacier Rim Tribe, giving his approval… except when he and Taylor did.

“Why are you only bringing this to me now, Keith? You know how I feel about your sister’s wild ideas of living with the humans. It’s dangerous!”

“Other tribes live—”

In case you didn’t catch it already… the blurb for Whiskers:

Jason Grant runs his own IT business from home, owns his own home, and has the best friend he could imagine. What he doesn’t have, or believe he will ever have, is love. When Jason catches a glimpse of his new neighbor on moving day, his libido ignites and his fascination in piqued. Can Romeo handle Justice’s tongue and teeth?

Be Warned: m/m sex, multiple partners, rimming, orgies

Excerpt:

“I want to eat you up with my tongue and teeth.”

He nibbled on the skin. Pulses of pain skidded up my nerves. Justice fisted my shirt and tore the fucking thing in half. Actually, pulled it apart. Seams popped until it was only on my arms. I laughed, lifting so he could pull the tattered shirt off me.

“I want you hungry for me.” I kissed his nose. It seemed stupid afterward but at the moment it felt right. Justice smiled, pushing me to my back. He straddled me. I felt his thick erection against my torso. Why was he still wearing pants? Why was I? Justice rubbed his lips over my collarbone. He kissed my chest, one pec then the other. I stared down, watching him as his tongue slid over the skin just above my right nipple. I had no hair, which meant I could truly feel every ripple of his taste buds. He opened wide and his teeth scraped along my flesh. In that same spot, he kissed and then took my nipple into his mouth. He teased the flat bud and then closed his teeth around it. The sharp pain was mild, but it sent my hips jerking upward.

I was already growing and this just made me lengthen faster. He let go of me and moved to my other pec. Justice sucked on the skin here, taking some flesh into his mouth and then he bit down. It wasn’t enough to break the skin but damn close. I gasped as the sensation turned to pain then back to pleasure. “Too much?” “No.” The fact that he asked made me smile. He cared. I wasn’t just some random fuck. I still wasn’t sure where I stood with his VP, but that was for another conversation. Right now, I wanted to do the least amount of talking and the most about of groaning. Justice bypassed that nipple and moved to my torso. He outlined each curve of my ab muscles with his tongue, then dipped into my belly button.

He took the top section of flesh between his lips and gave that a bite. I felt the pressure of his teeth as they pressed into my flesh. When it became too much, I cried out, “Damn!” I was breathing heavily. That had hurt but so damn good. Who knew the big black man was into biting? And I fucking liked it. “Pants. Off.” He practically grunted the words. I lifted my hips up, tugged the pants over my ass cheeks and down as far as I could, but he was still straddling me. Justice stood up on the bed. He stared down, watching me as I removed my jeans and threw them. My dick was hard between my legs. It swelled at the tip, showing off my blushed penis head and the long shaft covered with delicate skin.

“Take mine off too.”

I was sitting up, reaching to unbutton his pants. Wouldn’t want to hurt his goods. I slid them down his thighs and stopped to marvel at the sight. Justice naked was damn near breathtaking. All that dark flesh, his hard dick curved and his balls hanging like treats. Justice placed his hand on my shoulders and I removed one of his legs from the pants then the other. Just like that, we were both naked. I kept having flashes of our last time nude and the promises he made. I’d never been so excited to have sex before. Yeah, I loved orgasms, but with Justice it was different. It wasn’t about the climax but how we got there.

Guest Author: Tempeste O’Riley: Breaking through the walls we build

Good morning! *waves* Today I’d like to tackle a little topic… homophobia. Well, honestly, it’s not just the gay part that I’m speaking of, but homo/bi/trans/gender/etc. As you’ll see in my guest spot below, it’s a personal issue, not simply one that I feel strongly about for others. There’s more to the story, of course, such as one of my children being bi, another being gender fluid, and another being asexual, but the point remains the same, no matter what person I’m fighting for.

I’ve taken some of this and used it in my novels—Temptations of Desire has a bi man and a genderfluid person fall in love. Both characters have been shunned, dumped, and hurt in many ways because of who they are… who they love…. how they present to the world. Truth in Lace is where Lexie, the genderfluid character above, first begins to embrace the shift and flow of gender, thank to the help of his twin (Truth is a short, not a full novel).

Now, on to my slightly rambling but truly heartfelt post….

ho·mo·pho·bia noun \ˌhō-mə-ˈfō-bē-ə\
Definition of HOMOPHOBIA:
An irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuality or homosexuals

* The same goes for biphobia, transphobia, and so much more.

Yes, you read that right. The official definition says it’s an irrational fear or aversion to US. To people being whom they were born to be. And while I’m not sure I agree (hate isn’t fear, it’s being an ass hat and hiding behind religious, societal, etc. excuses to hate, abuse, and even kill others) I will thank the dictionary for admitting that it’s irrational.

We as a society do the most harm to the individual. It’s that simple, yet it’s so much more than that. Humans like things in boxes. The problem is that so many people don’t fit in those boxes, the ones that others deem acceptable or real. Yes, we even argue over which boxes are valid, not just which ones we want to accept as okay.

I have to say a big Hell No to those that try to not only put me in boxes, but also tell me which boxes are real. I was recently asked what it is that draws straight women to read M/M books and I had to answer that I had no clue as I’m not either of those things. I am a omnisexual/pansexual (even less believed in that being bi :/ ) and genderfluid person. I happen to have been born with female bits, but that does not mean that’s who or what I am.

Boxes are things I both love and hate. Love them for storing things; hate them when others try to classify me. I’m not homosexual enough, being bi/omni/pan. I’m not straight enough, being bi/omni/pan. I’m not male enough, being I have girl parts. I’m not female enough, being I have many, many male days. I’m not trans as I have many girl days. I’m not cis, as… I have many boy days. And then you have those that don’t believe Bi even exists (your belief in me does not invalidate my existence, I promise).

Now, my experiences may skew my worldview, but from others I’ve met, the political fights going on across this, and many other countries, and the thousands of blogs and people out there, I don’t believe I’m unique. Instead of boxes and walls, we need to focus on the individual. Why does the body matter so much to others? And why do others feel they have the right to categorize, and then often dismiss, others?

Don’t assume what the person you are speaking to or about is what you think they are. That beautiful woman may be struggling because her body isn’t what matches her mind and spirit. That handsome man may have been born a woman. That pretty boy you assume is a gay twink might just be a straight man. And that big butch man? Yeah, he just might be a happy, dedicated bottom.

We build the walls that imprison us, and only we can make the change needed to tear them down. Take a moment to look around you and check out the walls and boxes you live in. Are they right? Are they restrictive? Do they even truly match who you are inside?

We are many individuals, not one singular society. We have many hearts and lives, not one collective experience. Never allow yourself to be placed in a box or hidden behind a wall—that goes for the boxes and walls we build ourselves. You can only be who you are, to be anything less would be to betray your very soul. Never let others (or self) force you to be something you are not.

We are individuals. We are people who have hearts and souls. We love, laugh, live, fight, and die. But we are not merely the labels others give. I am who I am, and that’s enough for me. If it’s not for others, that’s their loss as I will not hide my soul or allow others to hide it for me.

Description:

Shane and Leo have been best friends forever: through high school, dating disasters, and family losses. Lately though, Shane has been feeling more and more unsettled. His girlfriend dumped him because he wouldn’t spank her, and he can’t stop thinking about the kiss he and Leo shared in high school, long before life happened and they grew up.

When Leo confronts Shane about his depression, the whole, unpleasant story about the breakup comes spilling out. Leo offers to spank Shane so he can understand the appeal, and shockingly, Shane wants to agree, but both of them are straight and he’s not sure it’s a good idea. Besides, he’s not into pain and he feels weird asking his best friend for sexual advice—Leo is too important to him to risk their friendship over something like this. So what if he can’t figure out why the idea is so intriguing?

Story Excerpt:

“Just relax,” he said out loud. He wasn’t sure if he was trying to convince himself or Shane.

Shane snorted. “Um, sure. No problem. You’re about to spank me, God help us both, and you’re telling me to relax?”

“Okay then, don’t relax. I don’t think it will make a difference,” Leo said, abruptly amused. What the hell were they doing? This was crazy. “Christ, how much did we drink tonight?”

Shane burst out laughing. “Not that much. Not nearly enough. In fact, I think we need to drink more.” He made as if to get off the bed, but Leo pushed down on his shoulders, preventing him from moving. Shane immediately buried his head in his pillows, shoulders still shaking from laughter.

And fuck if he doesn’t look fucking fantastic on my bed, burrowed into my pillows. God, I’m going to lose it tonight, Leo thought. He sat on the bed, ignoring the way Shane froze as the mattress dipped under his weight. “I promise I won’t hurt you.”

Shane lifted his face and glanced at him, then buried his face in the crook of his elbow. “I thought that was the point,” came his muffled response.

Leo ran his palm from Shane’s shoulder to his waist. Damn, the man was fine. And warm. So damn warm… “You know what I mean,” he murmured, massaging Shane’s back. His friend was so tense Leo half expected him to sprain something if he didn’t relax.

Shane shrugged. From Leo’s point of view, the movement highlighted his friend’s impeccably toned back. He sighed as his cock gave an interested twitch, then raised his hand and brought it down firmly on Shane’s backside.

Shane yelped, thighs twitching. “Give a guy some warning!”

Leo smacked him again. “Warning you will only make you tense up.”

Shane made a muffled sound.

“What did you say?” Leo asked, bringing his hand down again. He wished he could see through Shane’s jeans. He wanted to watch his friend’s skin get rosy and hot. Jesus. He closed his eyes, idly rubbing the spot where he’d spanked Shane.

“I said, wouldn’t this be better if I took off my jeans?”

Leo’s throat closed up. He coughed. “Yeah,” he croaked, unbelievably turned on. “Probably.” He had no blood left in his brain for thinking.

“Close your eyes,” Shane said.

Leo frowned, hand still rubbing over Shane’s ass. “What?”

“Close your eyes. I can’t do this with you staring at me.”

Leo blinked. “That makes no sense. I’ve seen you naked before.”

“Just fucking close your eyes, okay?” Shane asked, sounding frustrated.

Leo took a deep breath and humored him. “Fine. My eyes are closed.” He felt Shane pull away from him, then heard a rustle of fabric. The mattress bounced and he put his hands in his lap, hoping Shane couldn’t tell how aroused he was.

“Okay,” Shane said nervously.

Leo opened his eyes and gasped. Shane was lying on his stomach completely nude. He let his eyes roam up and down his body, finally coming to rest on the glowing pink of Shane’s ass.

“Don’t just stare,” Shane said, sounding even more tentative.

Leo felt his hand move as if in a dream, coming down on Shane’s left buttock firmly. The smack echoed through the room. Shane jumped.

“Oh God,” he moaned, so softly Leo wasn’t sure he hadn’t imagined it. He let his hand caress the skin, enjoying the way Shane’s soft hair felt on his palm. He was golden all over, soft hair covering up sleek muscles. Without giving any warning, he spanked Shane again, on the right side of his ass this time. The imprint of his hand showed up beautifully on Shane’s perfect skin.

Crutches and Ring Splints? What’s that got to do with romance…

Morning everyone! I’m thrilled to be here at Nikki Prince’s author blog. Today I’m going to talk a little about the ring splints you see on the books cover an the crutches from the blurb (see below, :c) ). You see, my knowledge of EDS, the genetic disorder James has, is not just from internet research. Nor is my knowledge of forearm crutch. I too have EDS, use crutches to walk, and honestly should have the splints on a couple of fingers—similar to what you see on the cover. Did I mention how much I love the cover Reese Dante created for my guys?

Anyway, the point is that I know what it’s like to be seen for your assistive aids instead of for who you are and that is one of James’s biggest problems. He hates that people see his “sticks” instead of him. He’s given up on finding his prince and on love for himself in general.

Seth Burns however is not a man that cares about such trifles. If he sees something in you he likes, then that’s it. Period. The catch is convincing James that he’s serious and that he’ll not turn into another monster… like his previous partners have.

So what do ring splints and forearm crutches have to do with romance? Everything! We all have hurts and fears, James’s are just a little more noticeable than most. Besides, why can’t the physically challenged but wonderful man get his HEA? In Designs of Desire you get to travel along with James as he learns that his disabilities are not what define him… his heart is.

I hope I’ve interested you in my first story with Dreamspinner Press. James and Seth can’t wait to share their story with you (warning, they love the readers to visit their bedroom too, lol)!

As CEO of his company, Carrington Enterprises, Seth Burns is a take-charge kind of guy, and he is instantly smitten by the artist helping with his newest project. When he witnesses James suffer a panic attack, a protective instinct he never knew he had kicks in. He truly believes nothing is unobtainable—including James—if he’s willing to put in the time and effort.

James is shy and confused by Seth’s interest in him as a person. With Seth’s support, can he work through his fears to finally find the true love he deserves, or will someone finally land the crushing blow he won’t survive?

Excerpt:

Once you’ve read over everything and start your designing, I want you to visit the site we chose for the first hotel. It’s here in Milwaukee, so it shouldn’t be too far for you. Would you be ready by Friday?” At James’s accord, Seth opened his briefcase and began pulling out folders and large manila envelopes and setting them in front of James. He paused, peered up at James, and blinked hard. “I should call someone to carry these things for you,” he mumbled, glancing at the items and toward James’s crutches. “You can’t fit all this in your bag.”

James pinched the bridge of his nose while counting to ten in his head. Why do they always see the sticks instead of me? “Mr. Burns.”

“Seth, please,” he interrupted, giving James a soft smile.

“Seth, Chase acts as my assistant when needed. He will tend to anything I can’t transfer up to my office personally. There is no need to be concerned.”

A strange look flashed across Seth’s face, but his expression quickly returned to his previous in-command smile. “Very good then.”

They chatted a bit about ideas and plans before Seth shifted his coat sleeve back to check his watch. With a slight frown, he said, “Well, I need to head back to the office. I will leave this all in your fine hands, James. Please call me here.” He pulled out his business card and wrote something on the back. “I look forward to our next meeting.”

Seth held out his hand. James flexed his fingers and clasped the offering. He knew this was for work, but somehow it felt different this time. Warm and strong, the grip shot tingles up his arm. Seth seemed to hold on a little longer than necessary for business needs. It had been so long since a man touched him, at least without violence or pain. James shook off the thought he might be interested. Beautiful men like Seth didn’t waste their time on guys like him. Besides, he wasn’t certain he wanted to go down such a painful road again.

James stood in the doorway, watching Seth saunter out the main doors, wishing for something, though not really sure what.

A Secret Love by Douglas Black

Hi Nikki,

Thank you so much for having me over to your fabulous blog to talk about my new release, ‘A Secret Love’. ‘A Secret Love’ is a short, steamy M/M tale about a couple who are forced to keep their relationship a secret from everyone around them.

The idea of that enforced secrecy was something that really drew me into the story. I wanted to know how a relationship can cope when the two people involved can only meet up once every so often, and even then only in secret. I wondered what kind of pressure that would put on my characters Mark and James as individuals, and as a couple.

Most of all, I wondered what they would do about their situation? Would they make the best of it, or would they try to change it. Would they come out vocally to the rest of the world, or would they think they had wasted enough time already and just slip away to be together?

In the end, I let the characters lead me through the story, and their decisions were both surprising and rewarding. ‘A Secret Love’ was a story I absolutely loved writing, and I hope people get a similar enjoyment through reading it!

James is nervous when he pulls into the car park of the secluded and conservative Caledonian Hotel. He slips off his wedding ring, gives a false name at reception and checks into his room.

When Mark finally arrives James expects their time together to conform to the usual pattern, but Mark surprises him. Mark wants candlelit dinners and walks on the beach. James, well, James just wants to make up for lost time. More importantly, he doesn’t want to get caught. They have six months left before they can leave behind everything they know and start a new life together and James is desperate to be discrete. Unfortunately, he never could control himself around Mark. Throw in an interfering old couple and some very public displays of affection and Mark and James’s short hotel stay might just be about to destroy not only the secrecy that has always shrouded their relationship, but also their plans for a future together.

Excerpt

Mark returned the kiss passionately. James trembled in his arms. Tension coursed through his body and he could feel it mirrored in Mark’s. He could almost taste the other man’s nerves in his kiss. James savored Mark’s strong arms around him. He pushed his hands inside Mark’s suit jacket and clung to the warm, toned body underneath. The body was so familiar despite the amount of time that had passed since their last meeting.

“God I’ve missed you,” James said when he finally pulled away. Mark was breathless and didn’t respond at first, but the sexy, playful smile on his lips told James everything he needed to know. James took his hands and led him further into the room.

It was a large suite with living area and a huge bathroom. Mark swung a new sports bag, bright orange and emblazoned with sponsorship logos, off his shoulder and dumped it onto one of the two couches. He paused momentarily, reaching into his suit pocket.

James watched as Mark pulled out his phone and turned it off without checking for messages. He waited patiently until Mark had tucked it safely into his bag and smiled at him when he had finished. “Difficult getting away this time?” he asked.

Mark nodded. “I left as soon as I could. I was so scared I was going to miss the flight. I’m sorry it had to be mid-week this time. Will you get in trouble at work?”

“I have the flu.”

Mark smirked. “You look perfectly healthy to me.”

“It came on all of a sudden,” James said, closing the space between them. “Unexpected. Probably be gone in a few days. You know how these things are.” Mark nodded and James slipped into his arms once more. With his head on Mark’s shoulder, he turned to whisper against the other man’s neck. “I wouldn’t have been able to stand it if you had missed the flight, if you had cancelled. It’s been so long. It’s always so long.”

It quickly made the publisher’s best-sellers list. Douglas Black’s short story, ‘A Secret Love’, was published in July 2013 by Evernight Publishing.

Three Things You Didn’t Need to Know About Douglas Black

  1. Douglas Black had his first story published at the age of eleven. It had something to do with a bunny rabbit, a rainy night and a falling down caravan…
  2. Douglas Black is allergic to gelatin.
  3. Douglas Black is firmly of the opinion that, if Hell does exist, there will be a special place reserved there for whichever fool decided to cancel ‘Deadwood’.
