Autumn Musings

So, it has been some time since I posted to the blog. It has been a year since I posted, November 2020 to be exact. There is so much life that gets in the way. Covid-19 was one of the biggest things. You’d think since you have all that time, you’d have your stuff together, right? Nope. Not me, Covid quarantine made it hard for me to do much other than quarantine. Made through that, then getting used to going to work and pushing the fog from my brain to get back into writing. I love writing. I absolutely love it and it does feel good to be back at it.

By back at it I mean I finally found my groove and wrote outside my normal genre of romance and wrote a short piece for an anthology called Unbreakable Ink, called “Fly.” The anthology is packed with twenty-nine stories by twenty-nine authors! The absolute cool thing is that, that anthology is going to the moon, I mean literally, going to the moon on the MoonBox 2.0, which will contain the Lunar Codex’s Polaris Collection (including UnBreakable Ink). That really is something, to know that something I wrote is going to the moon.

Travel to the furthest reaches of space, traverse time, delve into the darkest parts of the mind and beyond in this collection of speculative fiction shorts.

Curated by Shebat Legion and presented by Indomitable Ink, Unbreakable Ink boasts twenty-nine stories and is the first installment in a series of anthologies designed to provoke the unbreakable imaginations in us all.

Let me know if you read my story in the anthology and what you thought of it. As always Live in beauty!

Postcard Fiction-The Right Shade of Love

According to Wikipedia postcard fiction falls under the term micro fiction.  Micro fiction as you can guess has many terms for it such as micro narrative, short story, short short story, sudden fiction, postcard fiction, micro fiction, micro-story and short short.

Well in one of my classes at the beginning of this year we were challenged to write a postcard fiction story no more than 250 words.  I wanted to share with you my story.  I hope you enjoy it and comment and let me know if you liked this or not.  It is a sweet piece.  I do plan to continue to have fun with stories like this.

“Love is Love”

The Right Shade of Love

My God, we’d finally done it. We’d gotten past the negative comments of those saying that our love would never last and now here I stood next to my man as his Mrs. I was now Mrs. David Magee. If you’d have asked me a year or two ago would I have thought this would happen, I’d have said no. You see our love was never supposed to be. I come from what some consider the wrong side of the tracks and the wrong shade of skin. It didn’t matter to either one of us. We loved whom we loved. Besides we all bleed red don’t we? Our love happened and we embraced it fully. Today was a representation of our forever.

We continued to stare into each other’s eyes as if both of us thought the other would disappear if we blinked. When both our eyes started to burn and we couldn’t help but blink we did so together.

He leaned in close and kissed my lips again right, there in front of God and country and I held on for dear life, trying to stifle the moan that escaped at his wonderful touch.

He chuckled softly, “Save that for tonight.”

“Nope, I’m saving it for when we get inside the limo.”

He laughed out loud. “Race you there!”

“You’re on!” Grabbing my train, I ran down the aisle with his hand in mine with cheers from the crowd fluttering down as flowers paved the way to our forever.

Why I’ve Been Mostly Silent

50265920_00302_0135_XLargeI’m not sure how many of you know that I’ve been seriously busy with going to school to get my BA in Creative Writing and English with a concentration in Fiction.  I’m pleased to say that I actually graduated with honors on May 9th, 2015 from Southern New Hampshire’s University through their online program.  I started in April 2014 and will finish with my last two classes in July. It’s been a long year of missing some family things, doing homework late into the night all while working full-time and rearing two children by myself who are both in elementary school.  I plan to get start on my Master’s in July 2015.

Why is this a big deal to me you ask?

Well for one, I have a learning disability and I never thought I’d be able to finish and get my Bachelor’s degree let alone with a 3.9 GPA.  You see I was told at an early age by some that I’d never amount to anything.  That stuck for a long while until I decided in 2012 that I wasn’t going to be who those naysayers said I was.  I was going to see if I could get published or I’d stop saying I was a writer. I got published and after that I felt I could do anything I put my mind to.

Then in 2013, my life took another turn where I became a single mother to two amazing children.  I struggled for a bit, I was already busy with a full-time job, being a full-time board member for my local RWA chapter and raising my children.  Finally done with wallowing in self-pity (though most didn’t know that was what was happening as I was still writing, publishing and functioning) I decided to go to school.  I did my research to find a school that I could go to online so that I didn’t have to leave my children at night and because I don’t drive (but that’s another story).  I found Southern New Hampshire University and it was insta-love.

It was the best thing I’d ever done.  Going back to school though granted I was scared I knew in my heart this is what I needed to do for myself and my children.  I love writing and I want to teach Creative Writing to college students.  The only way to do that is to go to school.  Honestly, at first I thought I’d just be going for my BA.  I wasn’t even sure how well I would do.  Now I can truly say I’m addicted.  I love school, yes it is hard but it is also proof that even with my learning disabilities I can do this.

I will be the first to tell you that reading is the reason my academic life is going so well now.  My learning disability used to be in all areas of school.  But once I started reading that disappeared to only leave me with a learning disability in math.  I’m proud to say I got a B+ in my math two terms ago by working extra hard.  Me!  The girl who didn’t think she’d ever pass math.  I was pleased to be inducted into the National Society for Leadership and Success’s, Alpha Sigma Pi and into the International English Honor Society’s, Sigma Tau Delta.

I said all of this to say, to you my readers my author friends and even those visitors that happened upon this site by accident…keep going.  No matter what someone says to you.  You can do it, I can do it, we can do it. I may go silent again…but it is only because I’ll be in the Master’s program reaching for the stars.

What is the one thing you’d like to do in your life, but haven’t?

About Swagger:

Swagger.jpg

Nine years, two lives, one love.

We all have dreams. Mine were filled with college and the boy I loved, Cruz Montoya. But all that went up with smoke when he got sent to Juvenile Hall, my sister killed herself, and Dad up and left. My mother and I use that terminology loosely became a monster transferring her pains and disappointment and I became trapped.

Honorably discharged I’m back in Arlington Heights, the small town that only remembers the black sheep persona of my youth. I could list a dozen reasons for my return, but the only one that matters is Roxanne Waters. I should probably leave her be. I’m not much of a catch with PTSD and the childhood memories rattling around in my brain. Yet, I can’t walk away. There’s a darkness that surrounds the death of her sister, a secrets that’s slowly killing her. I’m going to find out everything. This is the moment of truth to see if we can make it or if I’m nine years too late.

Nikki’s a multi-published author with several epublishing houses. She loves to write Interracial romances in all genres, but wants to let everyone know to not box her in, because there is always room for growth.

My Writing Process Blog Tour!

Welcome to My Writing Process Blog Tour!  I was invited to play along by my wonderful friend Elyzabeth M. VaLey.  She did this very thing last week and you can find her post here: http://www.elyzabethmvaley.com/. At the end you will see the other authors that I invited to participate after me.  I was supposed to pick three…but as always I had to go above a little and I picked four!

So follow me into the way my crazy Muse works: I was asked four important questions:

1)     What am I working on?

 2)     How does my work differ from others of its genre?

 3)     Why do I write what I do?

  4)     How does your writing process work?

Okay for the first question of what am I working on.  To answer that I’d have to say what am I not working on!  Whew!  I am constantly working on stories.  I love writing and since getting my first contract in March 2012 I have been writing like mad and will continue to do so.  I write contemporary, paranormal right now and have plans to go into other genres. I like to see women that resemble me so I write Interracial romances. Though that doesn’t mean I haven’t done other combinations besides bw/wm.  I have written f/f, m/f, m/m/f etc but no matter the gender combinations or racial combinations it all boils down to love.
Second question is how does my work differ from others in the genre?  Hmm that’s a toughie.  I mean if you really think about it in any genre there is an overflow of talent running around.  For myself personally I like to write the things that I like to see. I try to be different by I try to take a usual plot and make it my own through my characters.
Third question is why do I write what I do?  I love romance, but most importantly I love it when I can create characters and their worlds in which they have problems and that problem is overcome because of their love for one another.
Hmm now the fourth question is a bit of a tough one.  My writing process varies as I have a full time job, two kids who are still little, a eight year old and a ten year old.  I have to write where and when I can. I can multitask with the best of them. Meaning I can write while there is a ton of stuff going on in the background. Kids, music, television…you name it, doesn’t bother me. There are the times though, that I need absolute quiet to write.  This is few and far between for me but it does happen.  I sometimes get images of the characters and name them and build from that. Other times I get the title first or a story idea.  It’s never the same process but it does have the same end result.
Plain and simply put…I LOVE WRITING!
Now for introductions of my fellow authors I’ve chosen to follow in My Writing Process footsteps:
Tempeste O’Riley is an out and proud omnisexual / bi-woman whose best friend growing up had the courage to do what she couldn’t–defy the hate and come out. He has been her hero ever since. Though new to writing M/M, she has done many things in her life, though writing has always drawn her back–no matter what else life has thrown her way. She counts her friends, family, and Muse as her greatest blessings in life. She lives in Wisconsin with her children, reading, writing, and enjoying life. Tempe is also a proud PAN member of Romance Writers of America® and Rainbow Romance Writers. Learn more about Tempeste and her writing at http://tempesteoriley.com.
Seraphina Donavan is a hopeless romantic with a wicked & oh-so-dirty mind! Those things, combined with her love of writing, prompted her to take the leap and transform those fantasies into written words on a page. As a curvy girl herself, Seraphina has made it a point to celebrate those women with delicious curves with her work through writing and the hot men who love them.
She currently has 17 published books & is working on many more..
Living in Central Kentucky, Seraphina spends her time rescuing stray animals, working for a non-profit agency and dreaming of becoming a best-selling author. She lives in a home that has more character than working parts and enjoys spending time with her fur babies. Feel free to contact her with any questions or thoughts on your mind.. She loves connecting with her readers & hearing from anyone! You can find her here: seraphinadonavan.blogspot.com
Brandi has wanted to write since she was a kid. She went from fairytales to romance. When she isn’t writing she is caring for her nephews, gaming or drawing. Brandi has an obsession with music and constantly has some sort playing. If she’s writing she is known to have tea or soda and candy or chips by her and music blasting in the background.

Jessica Jayne: I am a born and raised small town Ohio girl, who moved to the Sunshine State after graduating from college. I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English because I could not imagine doing anything else but reading and writing. It is such a pleasure to be able to share all the stories in my head!

In the journey of life, I got my law degree (and license) and also became a wife and a mother of three children. So, life is always an adventure.

I love to read and write… obviously! I’m a huge sports fan, especially college football and the Ohio State Buckeyes!  Go Steelers!  Go Rays! Go Lightning! I LOVE to travel… LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to travel. And I love sharing my love to travel with my children. Did I say I love to travel? I love to drink coffee in the morning and tea at night! I love a good glass of wine, especially if it comes from a bottle made by the FOOLS wine club… yep, I’m a founding member of that crazy group!  J  I love hanging out with my family and my friends!  Music makes me happy. I’m a mix between country girl and city chic. But I love nothing more than putting on my jean shorts, tank top, cowboy boots and hat and watching Tim McGraw or Eric Church belt it out!  I’m a sucker for a cowboy hat! J

A little Q&A about The Bond by Shyla Colt and Nikki Prince

I’m so very excited to announce that the collaboration between myself and Shyla Colt is out and now available.  This book was so fun to write.  I had such a great partner in Shyla.  Shyla and I wanted to do something fun so we interviewed each other and asked three questions each, take a look!

Nikki:  What is your inspiration when you’re writing?

Shyla:   I’m inspired by my characters. Their struggles, triumphs, joys, and pains become my own. Sometimes it’s therapeutic, and I find myself unearthing skeletons, and bringing them to the light. It’s my ultimate goal that every piece I write is better than the one before, and can benefit the reader. Wither it be a break from their reality, kinship, or a deep connection.
Nikki: The book The Bond, how easy was it to write?

Shyla:  I think it was easier to write with a friend. You’re bouncing concepts of one another, having a good time, and getting instant, honest feedback.
Nikki:   What do you do in your downtime if you have it?

Shyla:  Sleep? * laughs. Read, watch movies, and craft.

Now on to my questions from Shyla!

Shyla:  The main characters are Puma’s. What made you pick that particular animal?

Nikki:  If I remember correctly we both wanted to do something different instead of the normal shifters that most people do as in the werewolves. So then we thought long and hard what would be a great cat to have for the story and Rafe and Sanura both fit Puma for us. This was such a wonderful story to write and to do it with such a great friend and fantastic author was an honor.

Shyla:  What book are you reading now?

Nikki:  I actually just finished reading a short story called Haley’s Man by Sara Daniel. Not currently reading anything, busy writing away and working the day job.

Shyla:  What paranormal creatures would you like to write about in the future?

Nikki:  I want to write dragon shifters, avian shifters of some sort…really everything is wide open. I love the paranormal realm. Everything at this point is wide open and I like that. I love that there is so much out there to write and dream about.

So now we want to share our story with you.  Check out our blurb, our sexy cover art and an excerpt!

the-bond1m

Sanura Bast is willing to risk everything to keep her Pride of Pumas safe from Logan’s scheme to sell their land off to the highest bidder, including masquerading as his fiancée. After almost a year playing a role that disgusts her, she gets the intangible proof she’s been looking for. Desperate to end the charade, she turns to her ally, Rafael.
Banished for losing his control with a human, Rafael’s been looking for a way back to his Pride and to Sanura ever since. The woman set his blood on fire before she was old enough to accept what he wanted from her. Together they plot to stop Logan before he becomes chief, and now she has the proof they need to save her Pride. With that goal in sight, Rafael is ready to take what’s always been his and claim Sanura as his own.

Excerpt:

Sanura studied herself in the mirror, immediately recognizing the hunger that lurked in the dilated depths of her hazel eyes. She freed her hair from its elastic prison, pleased by the golden highlights brought out in the auburn tresses that fell to her shoulders. A lady wanted to look good for her gentleman, no matter what the circumstances. Blood filled her face. Desire stirred once more at the thought of an able-bodied male. There was no use denying she’d reached the pinnacle of her cycle.

The circumstances that had brought her to this point were daunting, but the meeting she’d set up for the evening would hopefully end all that.  It angered her that the archaic tradition of the Pride choosing mates was still in place. If she hadn’t been engaged they would’ve forced her to bond with him. There was a big difference between mating and bonding, sort of like comparing fucking to marriage.

If only she could solve all of this by riding out her cycle, literally if she had anything to say about it, and go back to her Pride a single woman once more in control of her destiny. A soft groan escaped parted lips as her need increased. The intense arousal moved through her body, as if to mock her train of thought.

Bracing her weight against the sink, she gripped the edge of the counter as she fought to tamp down an orgasm. She’d waited as late as she could to get to the hotel, because she was afraid of being trailed. Now the fire that burned inside her needed to be extinguished. Her nipples peaked beneath the comfy black track suit, and her panties grew damp from the abundance of cream she produced. A small moan escaped, and she willed him to arrive and soon.

This was what the Pride’s shaman had warned her about. Unlike the other females in her Pride, her breeding cycle was very unique. As the daughter of their Chief, she was the only alpha female in her Pride. When her cycle came Sanura had to mate with an alpha male to end her heat. This was fine, until the Pride had decided it was time for her to bond and determine the next in line for Chief. Bonding for her people was different from most. For them it was a choice, not a biological response. The sharing of souls was a deeply spiritual experience she refused to have soiled by Pride politics. Her father would be upset. But he loved her. Eventually he’d get over the fact that she’d thwarted his plans to choose her path for her. Especially, when he found out about all of Logan’s lies.

Another wave of desire threatened to buckle her knees, shattering her thought process. I can’t even be out in public like this. Thank God, she was in her room right now. Sanura attempted to redirect her thoughts and failed, biting back a scream as her body shuddered and the wave began to build once more.

Her gaze was drawn to the bed where a night of passion would provide her with freedom she craved. No one else seemed to understand her urgency. Her sensitive nipples rubbed against the fabric of her bra. She gasped, and she sprang into action. Kicking off the black sneakers and socks, she slipped out of the track pants and white tank top, leaving the pieces where they fell. She had to come, even if it was by her own hand. The door opened with a soft click, and her breathing quickened. He was here, moving toward the bathroom by the sound of it. Fuck! There’s no time to get dressed again.

His scent ensnared her, musk and forest pines blended, throwing her heat into overdrive as it tickled her nostrils. Her gaze was drawn to the doorway like a magnet, and she watched him approach, his broad body shrouded in shadows. Anticipation ran rampant. He was about six two with long silky black hair, copper-toned skin, and eyes that mirrored a dark abyss. Rafael looked like his Native American ancestors. An unusual blend of Latin and Native American the man turned heads wherever he went. As he entered the bathroom he held up his hand to show her a red blindfold.

“What’s that for?” she whispered.

“For you, of course. I can see that you almost started the party without me.”

“No, you need to go back into the room. Let me dress so we can talk.”

“We’re not going anywhere until I claim you as I should’ve a long time ago.”

He moved forward, and she could see the intent in his eyes, the blindfold still dangling from his fingers.

“Rafael.”

“No, no excuses. I’m going to show you what it’s been like to wait.”

Pleased she offered him her back, turning away from the mirror. He pressed his body against her. The feel of cloth covering her eyes was so sensual it made her shudder. The red cloth stole away her vision, and her heart thudded in her chest. Her ears twitched, and her nostrils flared as her other senses heightened.

His body was firm and tight beneath his layer of clothing. The bulge in his pants nudged her back, making her wonder if he’d planned this all along. His teeth grazed her neck, and all thoughts fled. A low mewl of pleasure released from her throat. She reveled in the relief from the burning heat that swamped her body.
